Dashwood Books Item #28291
Dashwood is proud to announce our first book of drawings by the artist Carl D’Alvia. Based in West Cornwall, CT, D'Alvia is known for his bronze, marble, and resin sculptures that range from the abstract and geometric to the figurative and anthropomorphic. These sculptures often begin in the form of drawings but they are much more than blueprints for 3D pieces. In the words of Dina Wright from her essay in the book Some drawings feel delicate and airy, their simplicity crisp and neat. These elegant, singular works exude a sense of stillness, reflecting the artist’s affinity for calm. They echo the atmosphere of his studio, nestled deep within the landscape and tucked away from unnecessary clamor. Other works are as dense as a forest, showcasing endless scratchings and erasures. The inky abyss swallows you in whole, suggesting that the act of removal is just as revealing as creation itself.
The book features forty-two drawings of various sizes from over twenty years of the artist’s career; from sketchbooks and artist’s renderings of large outdoor pieces, to early figurative explorations and contemporary abstract pieces all in a variety of mediums: pencil, Bic ballpoint pen, charcoal and ink. The book accompanies a show of the same on view at Dashwood Projects, 63 East 4th Street from February 19th through March 22nd, both book and show delve into the evolution of the artists’ sculptural techniques and the emergence of some of his best know tropes or characters.
“Balking at minimalism whilst taking aim at figuration, Carl has always threaded the needle between seriousness and sappiness, object and idea.” DW
